MAY DAY: WORKERS HAVE NOTHING TO CELEBRATE - ULC

The leadership of United Labour Congress of Nigeria (ULC) has stated that, the Nigerian worker has nothing to celebrate during this year’s May Day celebrations; as workers are virtually mourning due to neglect by the government at all levels.
Kano state chairman of ULC, Comrade Ado Salisu Riruwai stated this during a lecture session organised to mark the 2017 Workers Day.
According to him, workers have not been given any reason to parade or match for the government rather than to sit and discuss the Nigerian worker’s plight.
He added that, the current salary scale in the present recession will top the chart of discussion during the lecture’s session.
“We are not celebrating this year because Nigerian worker has nothing to celebrate; in fact we are in a mourning mood. The government has failed to render services that will make us parade to its honour. That is why we resolved not to celebrate this year, we have resolved to discuss our plight and disperse as against the mass parade,” said Comrade Riruwai.
However, thousands of civil servants in Kano under the auspices of Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have defied the odds and converged at Sani Abacha stadium in commemoration of the workers day.
The event was witnessed by the executive governor of the state, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and some members of his cabinet.
Addressing the mammoth crowd, the governor promised to always work in harmony with the labour organisations in their struggles to improve the welfare of the civil servants.
He blamed the ailing economy for labour crisis in some states, declaring that Kano state government has been among the few states that were able to pay their workers salaries.
He called on private employers and companies to always live to their responsibilities in ensuring that all their staff are being taken care of accordingly.
The NLC president Kano state chapter Comrade Kabiru Ado Minjibir commended governor Ganduje for his Labour friendly disposition by ensuring prompt payment of salaries and other entitlements to workers in the state.
